From the Artistic Medium to the Containing Space: A Study of Non-VerbalExpression Mechanisms and the Framing of the Therapeutic Art Workshop

Abstract

This research aims to elucidate the therapeutic dimensions of various artistic media
and explore their role in supporting mental health through an integrative approach. This
approach encompasses visual, performing, and literary arts, alongside their application within
familial therapeutic contexts. Furthermore, the study seeks to analyze the impact of the
workshop environment regarding both its nature (open vs. Closed) and its organizational
structure (individual vs. Group) on steering and enhancing the efficacy of the therapeutic
process. The significance of this study stems from the increasing need for alternative
communicative mechanisms that transcend verbal resistance, particularly among individuals
facing linguistic expression difficulties, such as children or those with profound psychological
disorders. In this framework, Art Therapy emerges as a medium that facilitates the translation
of emotional experiences and unconscious representations into symbolic visual, somatic, or
auditory forms, thereby contributing to the deconstruction and reorganization of internal
conflicts within a therapeutic horizon. Adopting a descriptive-analytical methodology, the
research categorizes artistic media according to their practical applications, ranging from
visual arts (including drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, and weaving) to performing arts
(such as drama, dance, and music), and extending to literary arts and bibliotherapy. The study
places particular emphasis on Family Art Therapy, offering a qualitative contribution by
linking these media to the « maternal » function of psychological containment. This allows the
therapeutic space to transform into a secure symbolic vessel that fosters free expression and
the construction of meaning. The analysis is supported by psychological theoretical
frameworks and clinical observations regarding the organizational dynamics of art workshops.
The study concludes that the effectiveness of Art Therapy is measured not by the aesthetic
value of the artistic product itself, but by its capacity for self-representation, the quality of the
containing framework, and the nature of the therapeutic alliance. Consequently, the success of
the therapeutic process remains contingent upon the integration of these elements within a
dynamic structure that balances creative flow with clinical boundary-setting.
