Abstract

The study examines the profound effects of disrupted educational contexts and repeated, prolonged interruptions to schooling on students’ sensitive periods of learning, focusing on the Palestinian case as a model for such contexts. It aims to analyze how these disruptions undermine sensitive periods of learning and to critically examine the prevailing assumption that learning loss can be compensated for, paying particular attention to their effects on students’ relationship with school, the broader educational consequences, and issues of educational equity. The study is based on the assumption that the loss of learning opportunities during critical developmental stages results in long-term cognitive, skill-related, and developmental deficits that are difficult to overcome in later stages of life. The study adopts a qualitative methodology based on extended field observation, drawing on the researcher’s experience supervising university students’ training in Palestinian public schools during the period 2020–2026. No in-depth interviews or traditional data collection tools were conducted, as the study does not aim for statistical generalization, but rather to reveal structural patterns and gradual transformations in the school experience within a unstable context. he study’s findings indicate that the educational losses resulting from successive disruptions to schooling extend beyond mere educational gaps that can be readily addressed. Rather, they represent profound deficits that affect the very foundations of learning at both developmental and social levels. These disruptions undermine the construction of cumulative learning and weaken students’ opportunities to acquire fundamental skills, particularly during the foundational stages of education, thereby adversely affecting their future educational trajectories.
